We are excited to announce that BridgeBuilders has been awarded a generous grant from the Dallas Mavericks Foundation to provide and install a new (and actual) basketball court at the Turner Courts Recreation Center in the Bonton neighborhood of South Dallas.

Every season, the Mavs Foundation selects a local nonprofit in need of a new basketball court used for recreational and community purposes. This is an in-kind project, which refurbishes or replaces an existing court or gym in need of repair in order to encourage healthy living and provide a safe place for children and residents in the community. Over the last 20 years, the Mavs Foundation has built 19 basketball courts throughout the North Texas community.

Built sometime after 1952 as part of the original Turner Courts public housing project, the Turner Courts gym still has a linoleum tile floor. Absent a suitable basketball surface, our Youth Sports program has been excluded from hosting any competitive basketball tournaments or leagues. This new floor means that BridgeBuilders’ KIDS basketball teams will be able to participate in more competitive tournaments and have greater choice in leagues closer to home.

Shaun Grant, Director of BridgeBuilders KIDS, who oversees both After-School and Sports programs, said, “This will afford us a great opportunity, using the medium of competitive sports, to build better athletes with even greater character.”
