Prestonwood Baptist Church Bible Study Class Provides Meals to After-School Program

Last year, BridgeBuilders was blessed by more than 350 volunteers, who provided over 1300 hours of service. Without these faithful volunteers, we simply couldn’t serve the number of people that we do.

One such example of this faithfulness is the Cartwright/Scott Bible study class from Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano. It was a little over a year ago that Director, David Cartwright and Teacher, Jim Scott invited Lynn Pokorny, one of our most ardent supporters, to share with their class about her experience as a volunteer with BridgeBuilders.

Upon hearing of Lynn’s experience and the needs of the children in Bonton, this class of empty-nesters responded by committing to bring fresh-cooked meals down to the After-School program once-a-month and they have continued to do so for the last year.

So, every month, members take on various duties aimed at providing that month’s meal for up to eighty kids. Some do the shopping, some do the cooking, some gather the food, some make the forty-minute drive to serve the meal and all share in the cost. It is a beautiful snapshot of the diversity of gifts given to the church being pooled and deployed in the service of others to the glory of God. It is simply Christians faithfully doing what Christians are called to do!

BridgeBuilders’ mission statement reads: “BridgeBuilders is an urban missionary organization that breaks the cycle of poverty by equipping and empowering the Church to reach the poor and demonstrate the compassion of Christ in real ways.”

We exist to serve churches, like Prestonwood and many others, in exercising their mission to the poor in South Dallas. We equip and empower the Church by providing Christians with a theologically sound understanding of poverty; guidance in fulfilling the Great Commission within poor communities, and a platform through which they can effectively serve the poor.
